ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT GROUP PROGRAM

     Description of the Program

The Alzheimer’s Support Group is a program for the caregivers of individuals in various stages of Alzheimer’s disease.  It provides an opportunity for group members to hear speakers on topics of interest and importance related to the disease as well as to share experiences and learn from one another.  In addition, group participants can obtain information about various community resources.

There are two Alzheimer’s Support groups which meet each month at Ponca City Senior Center, 319 West Grand.  The daytime group meets on the 2nd Monday of each month at 1:00 p.m. and the evening group meets on the 4th Thursday at 7:00 p.m. The facilitators for the Alzheimer’s Support Group are Phyllis Moriarty and Helen Bloxsom.

Anyone interested is welcome to attend.

     Purpose/Need for the Program

Alzheimer’s disease is a major concern of the senior population and is among the main challenges for the elderly. The Alzheimer’s Association reports that as many as 5.2 million people in the United States have Alzheimer’s disease.  One in eight persons over 65 and nearly half of those over 85 has the disease.  The direct and indirect costs of Alzheimer’s and other dementias amount to more than $148 billion annually.

Many people with this disease are cared for in their home over a significant period of time by a family member serving as primary caregiver.  The related stress for these caregivers needs to be relieved to maintain their health.  It is essential they find outlets to cope with the feelings resulting from the difficult, unpredictable behavior of the Alzheimer’s patient as well as the constant care giving responsibilities.  Caregiver participants commonly experience such feelings as isolation and aloneness, inadequacy, anger, anxiety, and depression.
